Fick just en story om Anki från en kollega i US, Richard Armstrong, som på ett bra sätt beskriver hur Anki brydde sej om andra människor och handlade därefter:
Anki and I had some great times together, working round the world. I remember this time in Bangkok
But much more importantly, she was there for our friend, Vadivel. Anki never, ever met him, and Ive met him only once. But the fact that he and I speak every year, and have since 1986 is because of Anki.
There I was at 6am in Belgrade international airport, waiting for my 7 flight to Frankfurt and then Stockholm, reading my book, all alone in this place. When from the corner of my eye I saw a lone, dark figure making his way towards me. And my only thought was that I wanted to be left alone! But I wasnt left alone. He told me that hed been discovered this early morning flying on a false German passport and would be sent back to Sri Lanka that afternoon where he would be taken and killed as his brother had been. Hes a Tamil.
I thought and said to him no, they wouldnt do that!! That doesnt really happen! But he convinced me that maybe it did. He gave me his name and I had to board the plane. The moment we touched ground and I found a phone, who did I call I called the person I knew would help, if anyone could. Anki! She understood the severity of Vadivels situation and I left it all to her, as I boarded SAS to Arlanda. Anki immediately called the Swedish equivalent of the US State Dept. , Utrikesdepartementet. They couldnt help but they recommended that she call Amnesty International. She didand they could do something! Within an hour or so, while I was still in the air (!) Swedish Amnesty contacted Yugoslavian Amnesty, who sent their Belgrade group to find Vadivel. They did and put him under their protection. In a few weeks he was at a refugee camp in Italy and after some years, he ultimately found his way to Toronto where he met another Sri Lankan refugee, Sonja. They have 2 grown daughters now and we talk every year, on New Years Day and on Brittas and my wedding anniversary. And our 36 year friendship is because Of my wonderful friendall our wonderful friend, Anki!
Heres to you, Sweet Anki ! Thanks for everything!
